Getting around
The Airport Express takes about 25 minutes to Dongzhimen. The subway is cheap and signposted in English; taxis are fine but carry your destination written in Chinese.

Why Beijing works for a layover
Beijing is the classic first stop in China. It’s not the easiest layover — the airport is far and the city is huge — but with 10+ hours you can see the imperial core and even squeeze in the Great Wall at Mutianyu if you pre-book a car or join a small group.
The route
Take the Airport Express to Dongzhimen, then the subway to Tiananmen and the Forbidden City. Walk through to Jingshan Park for the classic view over the palace roofs. If you have a full day, head to Mutianyu early instead — it’s less crowded than Badaling and the toboggan down is memorable.
Food to try
Peking duck if you have a sit-down meal, or a quick bowl of zhajiang noodles. Street snacks near Wangfujing are fun but touristy.
Timing notes
Forbidden City requires advance online booking with your passport and often sells out. Budget at least 90 minutes each way between PEK and the center, and more in rush hour.
