Getting around
Baiyun Airport connects to the city on Metro Line 3 (about 40 minutes). The metro is easy, but Guangzhou is spread out — don't try to see both the tower and the old town on a very short layover.
eSIM & payments
eSIM: Install your eSIM before arrival; airport Wi-Fi is unreliable without a local number.
Payments: Cantonese dim sum places and small shops are QR-code only — set up Alipay/WeChat Pay in advance.
Why Guangzhou works for a layover
Guangzhou is China’s food capital and one of its most relaxed big cities. It’s a great layover if you’re flying between Southeast Asia and Europe — the airport is huge and well connected, and the city rewards slow wandering more than checklist sightseeing.
The route
Take Metro Line 3 to Canton Tower for the skyline, then switch to Line 6 for Shamian Island — a leafy former concession area perfect for a walk and coffee. Finish near Beijing Road for shopping and street food before heading back. If food is your priority, skip the tower and go straight to a proper dim sum lunch.
Food to try
Dim sum (har gow, siu mai, char siu bao), roast goose, double-skin milk dessert, and anything from a busy street stall.
Timing notes
Baiyun Airport is about 40 minutes from the center by metro. Immigration can be slow at peak hours — leave a real buffer for your onward flight.
