Getting around
The Maglev is the fastest way in from Pudong (8 minutes to Longyang Road). Metro Line 2 crosses the city and connects both airports. Taxis are affordable but carry your destination in Chinese.

Why Shanghai works for a layover
Shanghai is the easiest big-city layover in China: two airports, a Maglev train, and the country’s most international downtown. If you only have one day, this route gives you the classic skyline and old-town contrast without rushing.
The route
Start on the Bund for the skyline, walk 15 minutes south to Yu Garden for the old-town feel and a quick bite, then cut through Nanjing Road on your way back to Metro Line 2. If you have extra time, add a museum or the French Concession.
Food to try
Soup dumplings (xiaolongbao), scallion oil noodles, and a quick jianbing from a street stall. Pay with Alipay/WeChat Pay — cash is increasingly rare.
Timing notes
Pudong Airport is far from the center; budget at least 90 minutes each way. Aim for a layover of 8+ hours to make the trip worthwhile, and always leave a buffer for immigration queues.
